The Illinois legislature has adjourned until after the November elections. And for the first time in Governor Rauner’s term, he has signed a full-year budget. There was a strong bipartisan effort to craft a bud-

HB4467 is the higher education bill that clarifies pre- vious legislation that provides children of line-of-duty death or disabled first responders with four years of
college tuition at state schools.
HB5177, which will allow for those entitled to
purchase service credits from service in the sheriff’s office and other county positions, who were turned down for a rehearing on their cases as the Pension Code did not allow for such, to get a rehearing on their bids to pur-
chase the service time in pension.
Our sponsors for these bills deserve our thanks. They are
Representatives Fran Hurley and Kelly Burke and Senators Bill Cunningham and Kwame Raoul.
Now that the legislature has adjourned, the focus will turn to the fall elections. The governor’s race has already topped $200 million in spending. General election TV ads have be- gun and will continue, so get ready for the onslaught of ads. More than 20 percent of legislators are not seeking re-elec- tion as we head into the fall campaign. There are many tar- geted races throughout the state. d

Democrats and Republicans in the House and Senate spent weeks working out
a budget that got them here. All four legislative leaders dil- igently kept their teams together so that these negotiations would be successful. Now, they head to the fall general elec- tions.
Once again, the Chicago FOP had a successful legislative session. Our work during the past few years has continued to build on a team effort, leading to more positive bills passing, while holding back several bills that would not be helpful.
We were able to get three bills passed by both the House and the Senate. These now await action by the governor.
SB 3509 will prohibit quotas for traffic citations as a means of evaluating an officer’s performance in the City of Chicago.
