On Feb. 26, Police Officers Taras Bilyj and Jay Ryan re- sponded to a “well-being check” in the 16th District. Upon arriv- al, the officers were met by a female witness who related that her sister- in-law needed
victim’s head. The offender refused to comply with verbal directions to drop the knife. At this time, Officer Bilyj provided lethal cover while Officer Ryan was able to gain a tactical position and deploy his department-issued Taser.
After deployment of the nonlethal weapon, the offender stopped his aggressive actions and Officer Bilyj was able to pull the victim to safe- ty and then secure the offender until assisting units arrived. The victim suffered multiple stab wounds to her chest and was treated at Advo- cate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.
If not for the immediate and heroic actions of Officer Taras Bilyj and Officer Jay Ryan, the out- come of this situation would have turned deadly.
