“He hasn’t smiled in a long time, (but) he was happy – and honored – to play with police officers,” Laura said about Tony. “I don’t think I’ve seen him smile that much in a while.”
Laura took comfort in knowing how so many people, in- cluding Tom Murray and Michele Arana from the Huskies, pulled everything together so quickly.
“It was just amazing to walk in that day and see the amount of love and support,” she shared.
Adam Katz, one of the FOP Stars organizers, said his squad immediately jumped at the chance to organize enough players for the event after Tony’s coach contacted him.
“A handful of guys on our club knew Officer Bernico and couldn’t wait to get involved in this game,” Katz said. “Needless to say, when one of our own needs any assis- tance, we are always willing to get out there and help out in any way we can. We, as a hockey club, felt privileged to be invited to play in this game.”
Patrick Bernico served most recently as a patrolman in the 9th District, and the previously worked in 021 and in special operations.
“He honestly loved it,” Laura said, adding that her hus- band spent so many years as a police officer because of his “love of helping people.”
He equally relished his role as a “hockey dad” and was able to accompany Tony on one last road trip in November, Laura said. d
