Cops in the Community
Though the holiday season might be in the rearview mirror, officers from all corners of the City contin- ued their giving ways throughout January. Whether it involved spending time with Scouts or hooping it up for fun in a neighborhood gym, Chicago Police Officers didn’t miss a beat in the community.
As they do most Thursday nights, officers in the 12th District grabbed a cup of joe at a local coffee shop — SIP Coffee House on West Grand Avenue this particular night — to meet local residents for conversation about whatever was on their minds.
Staying on the hardwood, CPD Women in Blue walked away victorious from an exciting night of hoops with the Chicago Park District Deaf and Hard- of-Hearing team. The contest was held to promote better communication between police and the hearing-impaired community.
In the effort to connect with area high school students, the 20th District promoted a Youth Explorers recruitment drive to encourage the commu- nity’s next generation to learn more about the police, while also getting involved in local programs.
Offifficers in the 25th District stayed busy by facing — and losing — a volleyball chal- lenge from students from Kelvyn Park High School. They also welcomed a Cub Scout from St. Ferdinand School to take a tour of the station.
A frigid start to the new year served as a reminder that no child should be without a proper winter coat. The 4th District did its part with the Operation Keep Warm Program, which collected winter gear for students at Powell Academy. The students showed off their gratitude and their new coats.
Students from Chicago West Side Christian School edged 10th District offi- cers 40-38 in the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Police-Student Basketball game, but that didn’t stop everyone from posing for a postgame photo after the Jan. 31 event.
