Hitting the “pause” button
As much of the world has hit the “pause” but- ton while waiting for the coronavirus to pass, we pray that our first responders stay safe out there.
I’m sure you have seen reports that the Illinois General Assembly meetings have hit “pause” as well. Legislators are working diligently with their local officials to help people cope with this disaster and trying to create a realis-
tic budget for Illinois. Obviously, the budget that
was being planned just a month ago is now invalid. Governor Pritzker and his staff are working with leg- islators to try to determine how bad the impact will be on the state budget. The legislature does hope to meet in April again to work on crafting a budget and other emergency is- sues that need to be addressed.
While it seems to just be a footnote to this crisis, a pri- mary election was held on St. Patrick’s Day. Here are some of the key results in Chicago from primary races: Chicago Democratic Senators Martwick, Peters and Munoz all won
their primaries. As you may recall, Senator Tony Munoz is a retired Chicago Police Officer and a big supporter of po- lice, and Senator Martwick is a consistent and strong advo-
cate for first responders. Suburban Democratic Sena- tors Castro and Joyce also won their primaries. In the House, there were several heated primaries in Chicago. Five appointed state representatives had mixed results; Representatives Pizer and Ka- lish from the North Side both lost their races, while Representatives Williams, Delgado and LaPointe each won their contests. Incumbent Chicago Democrat- ic Representatives Ortiz, Mah, Jones, Flowers, Thapedi and
Andrade all won their primaries.
While the legislature does not know yet when it will re-
turn, we know that legislators are working hard to be able to safely return to Springfield so they can vote on a budget for Illinois and address the needs of state residents.
