  Never a dull moment
This certainly has not been a dull year in Spring- field or in policing. The year started out with the retirement of longtime Speaker of the House Mike Madigan. This event served as the backdrop for the historic policing reform bill that passed the Senate literally in the middle of that cold COVID January night and passed the House with the bare minimum 60 votes just hours later.
Since then, one trailer bill has passed and been signed by Governor Pritzker, and another one is wait- ing in the House for final passage. These bills, while
not drafted to dramatically change the new law, are there to im- prove some of the implementation issues the law faces.
This law will continue to be a prime focus of ours in 2022. Ac- cording to polling in Illinois and throughout the country, it seems that crime and policing will be major issues also in the 2022 mid- term elections. Keep in mind that our primary has been moved from mid-March to June 28 because of remap issues.
The legislature will return to session in early January to continue its work.
There have been three recent announcements of retirements from the Illinois House. In Chicago, House Majority Leader Greg Harris has announced that he will not seek reelection to his North Side District. In addition, Northwest Side Democrat John D’Ami- co resigned his seat and has been replaced by Chicago Firefight- er Mike Kelly. In the southwest suburbs, GOP House Floor Leader Mark Batinick has also announced that he will not seek reelection.
