Important retiree healthcare information
Chicago Lodge 7 continues to make retiree healthcare a priority. Throughout the years, the FOP has established group-sponsored insurance options for retired members, surviving spouses and dependents.

*Note: There are currently two non-Medicare plan options for retirees who do not qualify for Medicare and want an al- ternative to the high-cost plans offered from the City. A third plan option may be available for the 2021 Open Enrollment Period that is being developed to be price-competitive to the individual Marketplace plans. More information on this third option will be available in November 2020.
The active member plans stay in place when you retire if you fall within the qualifying class under your current contract. This insurance provision stays in place until the member reaches Medicare eligibility. Medicare starts the first of the month preceding your 65th birthday, unless your birthday is the first of the month.
The following are examples of the Medicare start date:
• Sept. 18 birthday = Sept. 1 Medicare start date
• Sept. 1 birthday = Aug. 1 Medicare start date
How do I enroll in Medicare?
If you are collecting Social Security, you will automatically be enrolled. If you are not collecting Social Security, you must contact your Social Security office to enroll. This should be done 90 days before your Medicare start date. Due to COVID-19, Social Security offices are closed to in-person visits. You will need to call and schedule a phone enrollment. As of today, Social Security is about six weeks out for phone enrollments. Enrollment also can be completed online at ssa.gov/myaccount.
How do I contact the SSA or Medicare?
• The main Social Security administration number is 800-772-1213
• The main Medicare number is 800-633-4227
How do I contact Source 1 Benefits or Labor First?
• Source 1 Benefits (MetLife Dental and/Vision) 844-466-0883
• Labor First (Aetna MAPD and Aetna Non-Medicare) 312-248-7251
When I age into Medicare, what happens to my spousal coverage?
Your spouse loses coverage with the City the same day that you become Medicare eligible.
What group plans or Marketplace plans are available to my spouse when he/she needs a non-Medicare plan?
The FOP has a group non-Medicare plan with two plan choices. By open enrollment for 2021, there should be a third op- tion that is competitive to Marketplace plans. More information will be available when we get closer to the Annual Open Enrollment date. Members can go to the Marketplace website to purchase individual plans. These Affordable Care Act plans can be purchased outside the Annual Open Enrollment dates with a letter from the City. This letter states the date in which coverage is lost and triggers an Open Enrollment exception on the Marketplace.
When is the Open Enrollment for FOP-sponsored voluntary programs?
The 2021 Open Enrollment for FOP-sponsored MetLife Dental, MetLife Vision, Aetna Medicare MAPD and Aetna non-Medicare plans will take place Nov. 16–30, 2020.
