An historic night for Chicago Lodge 7 rendered the photo on the cover of this magazine, a gathering of these FOP presidents for the first time ever. Zoom in on the faces of – left to right – Kevin Graham, Mark Donahue, Bill Nolan, John Dineen and Dean Angelo, Sr., and notice how they cast their own versions of authority, leadership and commitment. Very, very, well, pres- idential.
When all these men who were presidents assembled at May- field’s Banquet Hall on March 23 to be honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Knights of Columbus Police Council #12173, the photo op offered something akin to the FOP’s own Mount Rushmore. Not as historic as what’s carved into the rocks of the Black Hills in South Dakota, but no less significant to Chicago Lodge 7 members.
The presidential legacy covers 45 years of leadership and dates back to well before the union ever experienced a collec- tive bargaining agreement that gave Chicago Police Officers fair, decent and livable wages and benefits. From the groundbreak- ing 22 years under Dineen and nine more under Nolan to the nine years of gargantuan growth with Donahue to the terms of turbulent but triumphant times that Angelo and Graham have navigated, the presidential legacy might have been best de- scribed by a couple of members who were there on this night to honor their brothers.
