The election season gets even more interesting
Campaigns are in full swing as we near election day. In fact, as you know, voting has already begun. Please remember to get out and vote!
The Chicago FOP has endorsed a bipartisan group of legislators, including Democratic Repre- sentative Fran Hurley from the Southwest Side, Re- publican Representative Brad Stephens and Dem- ocratic Senator Rob Martwick, who are both from the Northwest Side. This election season is just becoming more interesting as spending ramps up
and mailers are out, and many are controversial.
Speaking of controversy, Democratic State Representative
Stephanie Kifowit has announced that she will challenge Speak- er Mike Madigan for his speakership. I believe this is the first time Madigan has been challenged by a Democrat since he be- came speaker. As you may recall, he is the longest serving state- house speaker in U.S. history. The speaker has been a consistent voice of support for police and the important work our men and women in blue do for the public.
The Legislative Black Caucus continues to work on many issues to address the race discussion we as a society are cur- rently having. Part of that includes policing issues, in addition to healthcare, economic and education issues. We continue to work with our partners at the state FOP and with legislators on a variety of issues. These will most likely be addressed in the fall session after the election and next year.
