On Aug. 7, 2021, Officers Nicolas Morales and Brayan Jauregui in Beat 861B responded to a 10-1 call of officers down and shots fired by and at the police. Beat 861B was the first car on scene. Officer Jauregui exited the squad car and immediately pursued one of the male offenders southbound on Bell from 63rd Street.
Morales assessed the scene and observed Officer Ella French unresponsive. Morales further observed Officer Carlos Yanez, also in need of aid. Morales rolled Officer Yanez on his back and ob- served gunshot wounds to his face and head. Responding units continued to arrive on scene at this time, and Morales directed Officers Cristian Saucedo and Ricardo Torres to assist him in car- rying and loading Yanez into Morales’ squad car.
Morales then directed other responding officers to carry and
place Officer French into a squad car. Morales was joined by Offi- cer Thomas Raap, who advised him to transport Officer Yanez to University of Chicago Hospital. Morales proceeded to drive rapid- ly toward the hospital, followed by Officers Jose Garcia and Elyse Rodriguez, who were transporting Officer French. Along the way, Garcia and Rodriguez were joined by Officer Antonio Rodriguez, who continued chest compressions on Officer French.
Morales and Raap arrived at the University of Chicago emer- gency room and assisted in placing Officer Yanez onto a stretcher and into the ER. Garcia arrived a short time after, and Rodriguez and Morales assisted in placing Officer French onto a stretcher and into the ER.
