Focusing on priorities
While the Illinois legislature has not been able to meet in session during this coronavirus pan- demic, legislators have still been hard at work. The House and Senate have begun meeting in working groups on a variety of subjects. A main focus of these meetings is attempting to deter- mine what legislation needs to happen when the legislature returns for an abbreviated session.
This list will undoubtedly be short, as the main focus will be what absolutely must be done as the state sets a plan to move forward from this shutdown. We continue to work with legislators on issues of importance to police and public safety policy. Obviously, public health and safety for all will be the primary concern. In addition, the state budget will be a key focus. There is no question that the state budget has taken a huge hit in these uncertain times. As legis- lators craft the budget, it will be difficult to manage expecta- tions about the state’s finances going forward. The legislature hopes to meet in person before the end of May, but that is not
set yet.
Legislators continue to tell me how grateful they are for the
truly heroic effort of our first responders every day, but partic- ularly during this extraordinary time. They are praying for our police and truly saddened by the deaths of first responders to date. Please stay safe.
