McClain and his fellow officers know the reality is that not ev- ery older adult has someone keeping tabs on them. That means well-being phone calls, and even in-person visits, are a common occurrence to make sure no one gets forgotten at a time with so much isolation.
“Some of the seniors have family members, but they unfortu- nately don’t have anyone checking on them, and that is sad to us as police officers,” McClain offered.
The feelings generated over time between the district and se- nior residents are clearly mutual.
“They have called and checked on me and our district several times to make sure we are OK,” McClain said. “The seniors have called up to our station and prayed for us on the phone.”
Such heartfelt actions reinforce what McClain has come to learn as the district’s senior liaison: the eldest residents truly care about their police officers. However, he feels this seemingly un- precedented situation has still been a teaching moment for him and his law enforcement colleagues.
“When things get back to ‘normal,’ we have to keep in mind that the seniors are a vulnerable population,” he said. “We have to remember to keep practicing safety and cleanliness tech- niques with them for their health and well-being. Their safety is paramount, and that is in all regards. We as officers have to keep all of that in mind.”
