Mention ice in August and it usually has something to do with a cold drink on a hot day — not hockey.
But on Aug. 11, the Chicago Police Stars took the ice at Fifth Third Arena to face their rivals from the Chicago Fire Depart- ment. A dominating 7-2 win by the Stars stood out for its balanced attack, but the biggest victory of the night was the ap- proximately $5,000 raised for the 100 Club of Chicago, according to Detective Adam Katz, one of the team’s organizers.
“Everyone played well and played as a team. It was another successful fundrais- ing event...for one of our favorite, and one of the most respected, charities,” Katz said. “Anytime we can raise money for a good cause, especially a cause that helps families of police officers, we’re more than willing to do our part.”
The Stars roll into the back half of 2019
with five teams, including an over-50 squad. Katz praised the current players for continuing a legacy of commitment that has lasted for three decades.
“Most of our games are pretty late at night and usually on weekdays. After working long shifts or [having] to make it to court early in the morning, it can be tough to make games. But somehow, each team has a solid core of players who can always make it out,” Katz explained.
An early look at what’s to come includes a scrimmage at the Blackhawks practice
rink before Law Enforcement Appreci- ation Night on Oct. 22, a charity game against a team from the Veterans Hock- ey League on Sept. 23 and, likely in early 2020, the next battle against CFD, when the Stars will look to add to its two-game win streak versus the firefighters.
“Needless to say, we’re ready for anoth- er winter full of Icy Hot and getting home way too late because of lousy game times. [But] we’re all pretty excited about an- other season and gearing up for the CPD charity hockey season,” Katz said.
