Cops in the Community
As the August days ticked down toward the unofficial start of fall and the beginning of a new school year, the city stayed bustling and Chicago Police Officers kept having fun by engaging the community — all while making sure things stayed safe under their watchful, protective eyes.
The community turned out in droves as 24th District officers teamed up with local partners during a back-to-school give- away event. Youngsters not only picked up school supplies, but could get haircuts, well- ness checks, vaccinations and school uniforms.
Everyone in the 16th Dis- trict agreed: Pizza and Pop with a Cop was a success. The event — a collaboration among of- ficers, Alderman Gilbert Villegas and Trattoria Por- retta Ristorante — drew strong attendance from citizens, who packed the restaurant to meet and mingle with police.
In its 15th year, the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation’s annual Ride to Remember event drew close to 1,000 motorcycle enthusiasts for a late July trip to commemorate officers killed in the line of duty. The ride started at the 11th District headquarters and ended at the Gold Star Families Memorial and Park.
When Lollapalooza makes its annual appearance on the city’s lakefront, you know Chicago Police Of- ficers will be front and center to make sure the mega-sized music festival goes off as safe and quiet as possible. This year was no different during the four days of festivities.
