Keep an eye on furlough picks
Now that most of you have completed the watch-selection process for each of your dis- tricts and units, it’s time to start focusing on furlough picks. Since the furlough-selection process was ongoing as we went to press with this issue, be on the lookout for
bonus is that we have revised the original concept of this process by eliminating attorneys and their fees, saving members an enormous amount of money since the in-
ception of this practice.
Unit Rep/Watch Rep Christmas Party
Finally, the Unit and Watch Rep Christmas par- ty was held here on Dec. 5. We had a record turn- out, which is a testament to our goal here at the Lodge to invigorate this program with new blood and fresh ideas to coincide with the many wonderful seasoned veterans who have been representing their units throughout the years. As I said at the party, I can’t imagine how many calls we would get here at the Lodge if we didn’t have so many kickass reps running interference and staying in constant communication with the Lodge
and their affected units.
The tradition of having each rep bring a toy for some-
one less fortunate continued and the pile this year was impressive. If you are interested in becoming a Watch or Unit Rep, the selection is done a few months after the Lodge elections, which will be held in March. I welcome all of you to become involved in our union and being a rep is one of the best ways to do that. And if you need any more incentive, next year, Unit Reps will be delegates for the FOP National Convention. The 2017 convention will be held in Nashville and the 2019 convention is sched- uled for New Orleans.
I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday. d

with their assigned watch, and if you
see any, please let the Lodge know so this can be corrected. In the past, we have found some districts trying to manipulate things to get certain people a bet- ter furlough segment despite not being assigned to the watch. For instance, there have been some districts that have burglary or robbery incident cars in which officers pick furloughs with a watch they don’t normally work. If this is happening in your district, please let the Lodge know; we can coordinate with the City and find out what watch the A&As have these officers assigned to and en- sure they pick their furloughs on that watch or assign them to tact. We have forced the Department to re-pick furloughs in several districts, so let us know if you see anything like this where you work.
Summary Opinions
November brought about another successful batch of Summary Opinion results. We handled 10 cases this month and were able to get nine of the penalties reduced considerably. One stayed the same, which was a repri- mand. With your help, we continue to send the Depart- ment a message that their heavy-handed punishments without just cause will continually be reduced when a rational person reviews the facts of the case.
