ed, people might lock their doors only on occasion today. O’Shaughnessy also reminisced about going to the Cas- cade drive-in movie theater on 111th and playing base-
ball at Mount Greenwood Park.
“You could walk all over Mount Greenwood as a kid and
no one would bother you,” he explained.
He grew up across the street from McKiernan Park and
it was there where he met Chicago Police Captain Gene Cassidy. Cassidy, who has since passed away, played a role in him becoming a cop.
But this might be the best part of Mount Greenwood, at least as far as cops are concerned: They are embraced at the festivals, block parties and community gatherings year-round at restaurants and parks where the whole community comes together.
While O’Shaughnessy did not describe it as a “cop or fire bar,” he noted that Joseph’s Restaurant and Bar on 111th Street is always jam-packed. In fact, on Dec. 5, the Chamber of Commerce held a holiday party there.
And because of all of the above, O’Shaughnessy felt it was important to raise his children, Sandra, Jeff, Joy and Kevin, in the same type of environment where he grew up. He explained it always gave him comfort to know that when he returned home at night he was surrounded by his brothers in blue.
Living in a community where people could depend on each other meant a lot, he commented.
“The best thing,” he said, “was when we left the com- munity, our children, our wives and our family members were safe.” d
