Lodge 7 golf outing provides much-needed respite for officers

A rewarding calm filled the pavilion at Cog Hill Golf and Country Club late in the afternoon on Aug. 22. Rain had threatened to rule the day, but now even the overcast skies had cleared, and if you didn’t know better, it seemed like a golf-fueled exhale left Lodge 7 members in a state of relax- ation they don’t get to feel nearly enough.
The 2017 Lodge 7 golf outing of course provided its usu- al dose of camaraderie – non-stop fraternalism that puts the capital “F” in FOP – as well as great food and beverag- es, prizes and carrying on a tradition started more than 50 years ago. But the event also served up a heaping helping of healing, a respite from all that goes with being a Chica- go Police Officer. At least for one day.
Nobody may have felt the power of the day more than golf tournament organizing committee member and longtime Lodge 7 Trustee Ken Hauser. He is thick into re- hab following quadruple bypass surgery earlier this year, and even though he has been to almost all 50 of these golf outings, he too felt something especially soothing on this day.
“When we are not fighting crime and corruption, we like to play golf,” commented Hauser, who still has a few more months of cardiac rehab before he can get back on the course. “There’s nothing like getting a day away when we can play some golf, maybe play some cards and have a few beers. It’s part of our lives.”

This year’s golf outing focused on providing an intimate, tranquil setting. One of the most rewarding aspects came from the vast number of sponsors that contributed to the bountiful food and beverage, led by the law offices of
