Being off-duty and on their way to court didn’t deter Officers Robert Roth and Agnieszka Broenic from stopping to check on a man on the morning of July 16. He appeared to have been hit by a CTA bus and was lying in the street on the Nagle Avenue overpass, where it crosses over the Kennedy Expressway on the City’s Northwest Side.
The same could be said of Lieutenant Antonio Baio who, while on his way into work, also noticed something amiss with the man, who was believed to be struggling with behavioral health issues.
Roth and Broenic, both assigned to the 16th District, first ob- served the man before he darted toward the fence, which curves inward to prevent climbers. That’s when Baio approached the man and began to talk with him in an attempt to calm him.
However, the man made comments indicating that he was distraught. He tried to scale the fence, with the apparent plan to jump onto the busy expressway during the morning rush around 8 a.m. on that Monday.
Baio quickly grabbed the man’s waist to prevent him from go- ing over the fence, while Roth and Broenic jumped in to take hold of the man’s arms to help guide him to safety. The man was taken to Presence Resurrection Medical Center for further eval- uation.
At a press conference a few days later, Baio credited his crisis intervention training for his attempt to work with the man to keep him safe. He also acknowledged that everyone was in the right place at the right time.
