Field Representative’s Report
Lots to cover...so little space
To start, I want to thank all of you for the out- standing job you did throughout the riots. The bricks, urine bottles and Molotov cocktails thrown at you were criminal and disgraceful. Through it all, you held the line.
Professional anarchists, opportunists and street criminals caused millions (maybe billions) in prop- erty damage, which was unacceptable and shame- ful. The failure to plan by City Hall and CPD up- per management put our members’ safety at risk. Many members were injured, some seriously. Our
membership performed and displayed constant professional- ism. You served our city with courage, dedication and resilien- cy — all in the face of overwhelming adversity.
Some places in our city looked like a third world country. I should know — I have been to a few. Watching this rioting occur was deeply disturbing. A place with no police is a place of cha- os. Good and decent people want police service, especially in high-crime areas. These areas get the most calls for service, and they have for decades. I wanted to convey my deepest thanks for protecting each other, our families and the law-abiding cit- izens of our city.
Now, on to Lodge business. We have been very busy here, and the phone has been ringing off the hook. I have answered many questions pertaining to a wide range of topics concern- ing our contract. Here are a few: What is the 6th and 7th day
worked? (Sunday-Saturday work week.) How many hours am I guaranteed on my cancelled RDO? (Eight hours’ compensation or compensation at the rate of time and one-half times the ac- tual hours worked, whichever is greater.)
So far, our members have told me they see FOP Lodge 7 hard at work. I would answer: Yes, we are. The long hours, research, work ethic and strategy are necessary to keep our Lodge mov- ing forward. The team here is fully aware of the hardships you have faced and will continue to encounter. Again, we are here to serve and support you in the most effective way possible (as seen in court filings to end days off being cancelled).
The biggest thing you can do for yourself and your families is to stay sharp mentally and physically. Get adequate rest. Al- ways remember your training, and remain alert. The media, professional agitators, and criminals want you to slip up. Be smart on the street, and do not pursue vehicles. Maintain your professional bearing, and continue to serve with honor. Safety is not just a word; it is a way of life.
Important side notes: Those intending to retire at 55 next year (2021) must put in your paperwork by Sept. 30. Retirees and sergeants, please get your dues in to the Lodge by Sept. 30 as well.
Get involved by coming to the Lodge meetings. They are held on the third Wednesday of each month. If there’s a topic you want me to write about, e-mail me at rnoceda@chicagofop.org.
