were probably thinking with his standard eloquence. “We must reject those who seek retribution, not jus- tice. Who call for violence, not peace. Who stoke hatred and mistrust,” Canterbury’s statement articulated. “It is these voices that must be challenged and, on behalf of our members and the families of the slain officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge and all across our nation, we ask that the violence against law enforcement stop. When the men and women charged with keeping all of us safe are targets to be gunned down by masked assassins, there is
no justice and no peace.”
Standing in the rain representing The Brotherhood for
the Fallen at Officer Montrell Jackson’s funeral in Baton Rouge, Chicago Police Officer Bob Kane found a silver lining amongst the literal and actual clouds. As a mem- ber of the News Affairs unit charged with posting the good work CPD cops do every day on social media sites, Kane, who has represented the Brotherhood two other times, noted how it all hit so close to home.
“I saw a family on the side of the road getting drenched, so I texted my wife to say, ‘I love you, I miss you and I can’t wait to come home and see you and the kids,’” he shared. “Whenever I go to one of these, it actually refreshes my perception of why I am a cop.”
Perhaps it is that perspective and all those felt during this tumultuous month that emphasizes why the peace- keepers are truly blessed.
