Cops in the Community
There are plenty of things to celebrate or commemorate every month, but October proved to be a particularly mean- ingful month across Chicago. Whether it was Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Chicago Marathon or remembering a fallen colleague, officers took a moment to participate in important moments of reflection and recognition.
Going pink has become a common practice during October to honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so it’s no surprise some officers donned pink uniform patches to mark the occasion.
Community members and police gathered in September to mark the 17th anniversary of Officer Benjamin Perez’s death in the line of duty. Perez’s partner and other spokes in tribute to Pe- rez, while several uniform-clad officers lined the street to salute their fallen colleague.
Domestic violence officers in the 11th District held their 2nd Annual Paint for Domestic Violence Awareness event. The event featured raffles, guest speakers, lunch and time for art as participants used their artistic talents to paint images of empowerment.
There was no shortage of officers lining the 26.2 mile-long course for the Chicago Marathon. While keeping everyone safe was their main priority, Chicago’s finest also took a moment to share the moment with participants, including other officers — such as this detective from Arizona — who were among the runners tak- ing part in the race.
