National Police Week 2016 shed new light on the honor and memory of law enforcement officers in Chicago and beyond.
The annual Candlelight Vigil to honor families of the fallen and read the names of the officers lost in the line of duty the past year was moved to the National Mall this year. For the 25th anniversary Vigil, more than 20,000 people attended – twice the number in past years – and the Washington Mon- ument served as a fitting backdrop for a truly monumental event.
As the week continued, the U.S. Capitol provided a stage for two equally monumental experiences.
The National Honor Guard competition witnessed a never-before-seen tribute when a CPD team made up of all female officers paid tribute to fallen female officers in Chicago and Illinois.
And the week crescendoed with the National Peace Officer’s Memorial Service, during which Na- tional FOP President Chuck Canterbury delivered a rousing and pointed speech that touched every officer.
An in-depth report of National Police Week events begins on page 40.
