In a Jan. 15 Sun-Times story relating some news about the applicants and comments from Lightfoot, information was reported that there are currently 13 African-Americans run- ning police departments in America’s 50 largest cities. And one of the big discussion points at rolls calls and in break rooms across the districts is that Interim Superintendent John Escalante is not just a Latino, but a Latino who has earned his position coming up through the ranks of the Department.

Even when the Police Board recommends the finalists to the mayor – and by the way, he can add his own candidates – there will conversation about not just who is next, but who isn’t. Officers hear the public sentiment about the new leader being a minority, and some minority groups will no doubt fire a shout across the bow when the final selection is made.
