10th District member bucks up to pay residents’ bus fare
n BY KAREN STAHL
The strange sight of a man jogging while pushing a young boy in a shopping cart caught the attention of Jaime Acosta the eve- ning of July 1 in the 10th District. He felt the situation was a bit peculiar, so he approached the pair.
“Hey, you guys good?” he asked.
“Yeah, we’re just trying to make it home,” the man responded. After a few more minutes of talking, Acosta discovered that
the man was the uncle of the young boy, and they were trying to make it home to Englewood after buying a pet bird at PetSmart. They were walking because they had run out of money for the bus. Acosta pulled out a crisp $20 bill and handed it to the pair.
“It was a no-brainer,” the officer relayed. “I just gave the mon- ey to them, and they were surprised — they both were. Especial- ly the kid.”
The child, who was sitting in the shopping cart, claimed that he felt hungry and thirsty. Acosta gave the $20 not just for the bus fare, but also for food and beverages later. His kind act is an example of just one of the countless courageous deeds per- formed by officers across Chicago daily.
“I think it happens more so than not, helping people,” Acosta noted. “I know officers who are always talking about nice inter- actions that happen.”
And the gift will undoubtedly go down in the memory of the uncle and nephew as an act that intentionally worked to strengthen the bond between law enforcement and the com- munity.
“I would do it again in a heartbeat, absolutely,” Acosta af- firmed. “I think that they’ll tell their circle of people what hap- pened. Everything — their smiles and appreciation — showed that they were very genuine people.”
