Make your voice heard on the elimination of qualified immunity
The Illinois General Assembly has been very busy doing most of the legislating remotely this past month. After the Easter/Passover break, they do plan to have more in-person sessions, with restrictions. We shall see how that new format goes. They have done well holding many committee hearings via Zoom, but it has been an adjustment. It’s a similar complaint that many people have these days about the new normal. One bill in particular that we will be working to defeat is HB 1727, which eliminates qualified immunity for police officers. This bill passed out of committee in late March, and we will work to de- feat it on the House floor. Please call your state representative and ask him/her to vote against this bill!
The session will continue through May, with legislators voting on many bills, including the very important redistricting map. This once-a-decade map will determine the boundaries of all legislative districts. This is highly important to every legislator, as it sets the map for their new district. Watch this process carefully if you can.
