On Sept. 9, Officers Samuel Brienzo and Mark Damato were working in the 4th District when they monitored a call about a fire at 100th Street and Avenue L. The officers responded to the rear of the building, where they observed fire and smoke coming from the structure. The officers then heard someone screaming, “I’m burning.” They saw an elderly man and a 10-year-old child in a second-floor window. The officers re- acted quickly, telling the man to drop the child to them. In
an unbelievable move, the officers caught the 10-year-old in their arms. They then carried the child to their vehicle and waited for the ambulance to arrive. Unfortunately, the man passed away from his injuries.
It is with great appreciation that the Fraternal Order of Police Chicago Lodge 7 presents Officers Samuel Brienzo and Mark Damato with lifesaving awards.
