Fifth District gives hope to future superheroes
n BY KAREN STAHL
When officers from the Fifth
District donated shoes, back- packs and capes to local youth on Feb. 12, they knew that they were helping foster the future superheroes of Chicago.
In conjunction with the nonprofit organization Unity Partnership, the officers were able to connect with children in need while cultivating a positive image of the police.
Fifth District Sergeant Brid-
get Robinson shared how out-
reach efforts like this are criti-
cal when it comes to laying the
foundation for the next gener-
ation in the area and their relationships with law enforcement.
“It makes you hopeful,” Robinson relayed in a warm tone. “Hopefully, it resonates with the kids and kind of balances out with more negative things they see.”
Thanks to the district’s donations, 42 youth were able to enjoy a fun-filled afternoon of pretending to be superheroes. The smiles spoke even louder than the exhilarated shouts of glee as boxes were unpacked that chilly Wednesday.
Robinson hopes that through more outreach efforts, the Fifth District can continue to connect with youth and shape the uplifting and fun image of police officers for kids. “People tend to do what they see,” she added. “If children see you giving or reach- ing out or doing something positive, as an officer, they’re going to remember that and
eventually try to replicate that.”
