LET’S PAINT
PEPPERMINT CAPS
Using a pencil, lightly freehand the five peppermint stripes on each cap, using the picture of Peppermint Caps Step 1 on page 139 as a guide.
STEP 1: Using the no. 4 shader with Green Mix, basecoat the thick stripes on the peppermill. Clean the brush. Using Pink Mix, basecoat the thick stripes on the salt- shaker. Note that the details on the saltshaker appear on the very top of the shaker’s cap as well.
STEP 2: With the 3/8" angular, apply floats of Forest Green to the tops and bottoms of each green stripe. Clean the brush. Apply floats of Cinnamon Drop to the tops and bottoms of each pink stripe.
With Warm White on the no. 10/0 liner, apply the slightly off-center pinstripes to each thick stripe (both green and pink). Using a clean no. 10/0 liner with Pink Mix, apply the slightly off-center pinstripes to the white areas of the peppermill. Clean the liner and then use Green Mix to paint pinstripes on the white areas of the saltshaker.
STEP 3: Load the no. 6 round with Warm White, offloading excess paint onto a pa- per towel. Lightly dry-brush a horizontal highlight around the center of each pep- permint cap.
Basecoat the peppermill’s finial with Pink Mix.
MIDSECTIONS
With the 1⁄2" painter’s tape, firmly mask off the ridge that sits just under the pep- permint caps. Using the 1⁄4" painter’s tape, mask off a horizontal line 3⁄4" up from the sections on which the gingerbread people sit. On the saltshaker, use the no. 12 shader with Green Mix to basecoat the areas between and below these two pieces of tape. Do not extend this basecoat into the gingerbread area. Follow the same instructions for the peppermill, switching to Pink Mix. Carefully remove the tape.
Using the 3⁄4" angular with Forest Green, float shading at the top and bottom of the saltshaker’s midsection, and immediately above and below the areas where the two pieces of tape were placed. Follow the same instructions to shade the pepper- mill, switching to Cinnamon Drop.
The patterns on the areas that were left empty after the tape was removed will be applied later.
GINGERBREAD SECTION
BACKGROunD: Mask off the perimeters of the bottom of the checkered borders using the 1⁄2" painter’s tape. With Tan Mix on the no. 12 shader, basecoat the bot- tom sections of the pieces (the sections on which the gingerbread people will be applied), and then remove the tape. When they are dry, spray the midsections and
