LET’S PAINT
POINSETTIAS
Using a 1⁄4" angle, sideload and float An- tique Maroon at the base of each petal. Switch to a larger brush and float to sepa- rate one petal from another. Follow this with sideloaded Dioxazine Purple in se- lected triangles where the shadows would be the darkest. Using a 3/8" angle, sideload with Fiery Red and float the top petals to create a nice highlight. Use the no. 20/0 liner with water-thinned Antique Maroon to add vein lines to each of the petals. Finish the centers of the poinset- tias with a series of dots, each smaller than the previous one. Begin with Honey Brown, follow with Cadmium Yellow, and finish
with Citron Green.
LEAVES
Sideload a 1⁄2" angle brush with Hauser Dark Green and float at the base of each leaf. Walk these floats out a little, making room for a second float of Black Green only in the deepest shadow triangles. Side- load with Citron Green and float the tips of the leaves, walking in toward the center. Further highlights on the more prominent leaves can be added with sideloads of Pineapple. Add
Hauser Dark Green veins. Add tints of Lavender here and there.
SANTA
Basecoat the face and hands with Medium Flesh, and allow them to dry thoroughly. Transfer the design details.
Shade the clothing next to the fur, beard, in the fold, and around the inside of the circle with a float of sideloaded Midnite Blue. Highlight the upper shoulders and the middle of the chest with Sapphire+White Wash (3:1). Add watery tints of Lavender, and then add additional floats of Dioxazine Purple in the shadow areas.
Using the no. 20/0 liner, add Emperor’s Gold buttons and chains to the cloak front.
Continuing with the liner, use water-thinned Burnt Sienna to outline the features, face, and hand. Sideload the liner with Shading Flesh and add a float to the top of the forehead, down both sides of the face, under the eyebrows, around the eyelids and nos- trils, under the tip of the nose, the lines on forehead, and the crinkles at the corners of the eyes. Sideload the liner with Hi-Lite Flesh and float a bit on the forehead, under the eyes at the top of the cheekbones, and down the center of the nose, stopping before you reach the ball of the nose. Add a final highlight on the roundest portion of the ball with Hi-Lite Flesh+tch Warm White.
Sideload the liner with Naphthol Red and add floats beginning at the lower jaw and walking in toward the eye and up toward the nose. Add a touch to the ball of the nose and a touch to the hand. Float with Shading Flesh to separate the fingers. Use the same color to add nails to the hand.
