108 The Decorative Painter • ISSUE NO. 2, 2014
The use of high-quality watercolor paper is of utmost importance, because low-quality paper will absorb paints too quickly and dull colors. When working on wa-
tercolor paper, a series of layered washes is required. Lay- ered washes of the same paint color in different watered- down consistencies lend just the right shading and depth. The washes’ traits need not be consistent; variation will create the illusion of movement and texture in the piece. Before you begin, experiment on pieces of scrap watercolor paper. Use one color of paint in different strengths, starting with full strength and adding more water for each layer. To allow for more time to work on a surface, wet the area to be painted with a clean, wet brush before beginning. This will allow the wash to flow over the paper instead of soaking into its fibers.
