After delivering surprising Championship 4 performances in the NASCAR
Playoffs during the past two seasons, Daniel Hemric got an equally-surprising
promotion to the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series in 2019 for Richard
Childress Racing.
Now, the 28-year-old, who was a well-respected short-track driver before
he moved toward the NASCAR national touring level in the NASCAR
Xfinity Series, will look to take a bigger step as the newest Cup Series
driver at RCR.
In the process, driving the No. 8 Chevy Camaro ZL1 will revive a number
FEATURED DRIVERS with Chip Ganassi Racing. The No. 8 also was used by three
last used by Aric Almirola in 2009 when Dale Earnhardt Inc. merged
generations of Earnhardts – Ralph, Dale and Dale Jr.
Dale Earnhardt, an inaugural inductee into the
NASCAR Hall of Fame, won six of his seven Cup
series championship with RCR.
Like the Earnhardts, Hemric grew up in
Kannapolis, N.C.
“Growing up in Kannapolis, it was all
about racing,” Hemric said. “I always
dreamed of having the opportunity
to drive for RCR and for Richard
himself. Now, two iconic numbers, the
3 [driven by Austin Dillon] and the
8, are going to be under one roof. I
know it makes Richard happier than
anybody, just understanding what that
means for the sport of NASCAR and
how our fans are going to be able to
connect with that.”
“It’s a perfect fitting,” Childress said. “Dale
Jr. was his hero back in the day and for him
to be able to drive an 8 that’s so iconic for the
Kannapolis area, that says a lot. He’s excited, I can
tell you.”
