As artifacts like these are digitized in high resolu- tion, through the application of the latest technology, combining the latest digital media with the most ancient, records such as cuneiform tablets that would most often be considered completely obsolete, continue to co-exist in digital form with the new and become more widely accessible. Unlike the processes of manuscript copying, which, as I will explain later, sometimes resulted in the destruction of prior exemplars of earlier formats, when texts were copied into updated formats, digitization does not necessarily assume the destruction of the object digitized, and may, if done responsibly, be part of a preservation effort to protect the fragile original object from excessive handling.
