Duane Peterson
OCS Director of Transportation Duane Peterson begins his work day before the school buses start their routes, and ends it after the last bus is parked. He joined Oconee Fire Rescue 26 years ago as a means of giving back to a community he loves. He took a hiatus when his children were in high school and returned about a year ago.
Assigned to Station 6 in North High Shoals, Peterson has a class B license to drive the fire truck, and he is also a first responder. He and the other volunteers are alerted about calls through a pager or an app on their phones.
Peterson says Oconee Fire Rescue is an extension of his family.
“We support each other,” he says, emphasizing that he is especially touched by the care and encouragement given to trainees. “They want us to succeed. They are the best firefighters in the state.”
Katharine Hart Peterson is proud of her husband, Duane, who volunteers with Station 6 in North High Shoals.
On weekends, Peterson and others can be found at the station, cleaning and maintaining the trucks.
“Everybody steps up and double checks everything to maintain all the equipment,” he says proudly.
