   EARTHQUAKE-RESILIENT
SCHOOLS IN NEPAL
     Project name:
Support for project implementation of the Nepal Earthquake Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Program (TA-8910 NEP): Developing Earthquake Resilient Type Designs of Remote Schools Using Locally Available Materials
Year (of approval):
2015
Funding:
Grant
Modality:
Technical Assistance
Department:
SARD
Sector:
Education
Team:
Naresh Giri Pramod Pudasaini Jitendra Bothara
CHALLENGES:
Utilizing modern construction materials to reconstruct remote schools damaged by the 2015 earthquake is extremely challenging
Locally available construction material like stone and mud, are not considered suitable for earthquake-resilient construction
Transportation of materials would be di cult, no road access, and very expensive
 SOLUTIONS
   School building designs
Using stone and mud with innovative techniques that proved to be earthquake-resilient
Several approved designs
The techniques can be replicated en masse around the world to save lives
Compliance to the NBC
Demonstrated through in-depth involving shake table tests of building models and computer modeling
Local materials and skills
The proposed construction materials and techniques are highly cost-e ective and environmentally sustainable
      NEXT STEPS
Disseminate and implement the techniques to reduce the seismic risk and to protect the environment
   Implementation through community mobilization
Inclusion in course Include in building curricula in training standards
institutes
Not permitted under the Nepal National Building Code (NBC) for schools unless compliance to the NBC is scientifically demonstrated
