Even those whose homes had withstood the torrent were destitute. All of their belongings, furniture, clothing, treasured mementos, important papers — everything had been soaked and rotted by the water.
The flood had been no respecter of wealth or position. Some of Lawrenceburg’s most prominent families had lost everything.
Merchants and business owners simply threw everything in their establishments into the street to be hauled away for garbage.
