Paul Outerbridge: Untitled (The Star of the East) 1937. Outerbridge’s Pictorialist roots - and the tropes of the ethereal, mystical woman-as-goddess (so popular in the 1910s and 1920s as art nouveau mutated into l’art deco). I first saw Outerbridge’s prints at the Getty Museum in California, where they seemed to situate perfectly in the semi-desert hills and clinical glass and concrete. Here the models are arranged rather like de-sexualised slabs of choice meat on what looks like a polar-bear-skin.
