William Henry Fox Talbot: Page from The Pencil of Nature (1842).
We’ve seen that Wedgwood, and Niepce had already used variations of the direct contact print or photogram - Laying objects on a photo-sensitised material - paper, leather, ceramic - and leaving it for a period of time in direct sunlight - and that John Herschel had not only discovered a method of ‘fixing’ these latent images, but had used this technique in creating his cyanotypes. But it was Fox Talbot who first used them in a book - his The Pencil of Nature published in 1844. And 80 years later, the Photogram was to play an important role in the emergence of photomontage and other modernist photographic practice.
