Lumiere Bros: reconstruction of Photorama Lumiere for Lumiere Cinema Invente exhibition 2017
This innovative homage effectively recreates the viewer’s experience of the Photorama Lumiere - using digital projectors with seamless overlapping throws, the viewer would have been lifted - as if by balloon - from ground level to float over the city of Paris - an exhilerating, immersive, disbelief- suspending experience.
Unfortunately, while Frank Rose’s The Art of Immersion is very good on the movie treatments that encourage total immersion (post Star Wars - such as Avatar, and Lord of the Rings), he does not mention the early 20th century attempts to actually build a simulation of an alternative reality.
