Edward Calvert: The Cyder Feast (1828)+ Bacchante (1825)
Edward Calvert: The Chamber Idyll (detail) 1831.
These engravings are small - this one is 4.5cm x 7cm - carved into the end-grain of fine-grain box-
wood, and printed towards the end of Calvert’s extraordinary output in the 1820s, following the death of his hero and mentor William Blake. Calvert was one of a group of Blake’s followers, who called themselves ‘The Ancients’. Look how Calvert has treated the diaphanous shift of the woman, and the lacy coverlet on the couch.
