for the First World War, it was Thomas Burberry’s finest hour: weaving combat-ready components into an enduring design. Today, the trench remains all but unchanged, with epaulettes, gun flaps, and the same D-rings that once carried soldiers’ equipment. It’s also still cut from shower-resistant gabardine — a fabric Burberry invented in 1879 and supplied to Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Antarctic expeditions. Since then, Humphrey Bogart has buckled up Burberry’s trench for Casablanca and Michael Douglas even pulled one on over his pinstripes in 1987’s Wall Street. Talk about range.
