SPRING 2021
When we began planning our Spring issue — my first as editor- in-chief — a question nagged: what’s the point of a magazine? Surprisingly, reflecting on a lost year provided some answers.
I spent most of the past year (and all of this winter) at home, and in my head. My screen time skyrocketed, my sweatpants became threadbare, and, like everyone else, I felt stuck in a time loop. Plus, my new yoga mat was collecting dust, a constant reminder of my failure to use this time to tone my body or take up a new hobby. In lieu of any grand plans, I decided that I might as well focus on work. Over the Christmas break, I turned my attention to my stack of back issues of Sharp, figuring that some research and preparation might help set me up for success in my new role. Turns out, editing a magazine requires hands-on experience; studying past layouts and profiles is mostly an act
of commemoration. But the process reminded me why I love magazines in the first place.
Sure, the Internet is a wellspring of content. You can nerd out about the newest Audi, vintage Rolexes, and latest Louis Vuitton collection, all at the touch of a button. But despite the web’s limitless potential, a printed and bound book is a singular collection of images and ideas that captures a moment in time, but is also somehow timeless; each issue builds on the last, and each issue is meant to last. Magazines inspire and inform. Where else can you see exceptional images, discover a new product, and read an in-depth interview with a bona fide movie star all in one place?
The point of a magazine is not to remind you of a world before, but to excite you about the world beyond. And that’s what we hope to do with this one.
