  DESIGN : GUIDE
BEAM LAMP BY TOM CHUNG FOR MUUTO
ANNULAR LIGHT BY MSDS FOR WOUD
This lamp doubles as a task and ambient light thanks to its clever design, which sees a single beam of light radiate through both its ends. $395
MSDS puts a modern spin on a classic cone-shaped lamp by ringing the edge of its shade with an LED, rather than hiding a lightbulb inside. $450
VINE SERIES BY CAINE HEINTZMAN FOR ANDLIGHT
SAINTE COLLECTION BY LAMBERT & FILS
ARCA 3-TIER CHANDELIER BY PHILIPPE MALOUIN FOR MATTER MADE
Two glass globes linked by a chrome tube, the Vine light is versatile; one makes for an attractive wall sconce, while stacked to- gether, they make an eye-catching pendant. $895 TO $5,950
Add a touch of colour with this Montreal-built lighting fixture made of brightly hued laminated glass panels. $2,170 TO $3,380
Chandeliers are often gaudy and overdesigned. Not Malouin’s design, with its simple and frill-free form. $15,050 USD

A new generation of Canadian designers is making its mark in the world of lighting
by WILL KITCHENS
LAYERED LIGHTING IS THE KEY TO A COZY HOME. A well-placed task lamp, for instance, might be right when working during the daytime, but you are better
off relying on the moody glow of an overhead pendant or a bedside table lamp come evening. In other words: you need options. And while design-conscious homes are often lit by fixtures from Italy, Denmark, and Japan — traditional lighting powerhouses — Canadian designers have made serious
inroads into lighting’s big leagues in recent years. Canadian designers — from those that regularly work with big-name international brands to those that have carved out names for themselves while manufacturing at home — are currently producing some of the globe’s best lighting. And why do Canadians seem to have a knack for it? Perhaps long winters and short days imbue us with a sense of the importance of light. Perhaps not. Regardless, Canada’s lights are shining bright.
