LETTER
ALL GOOD THINGS
EVERY EVERY EVERY MINUTE EVERY EVERY EVERY HOUR EVERY EVERY EVERY DAY THAT YOU SIT AROUND trying to to figure out what to to do do someone else is already doing it ” Tim S
Grover a a a a world-renowned personal trainer who spent years working one-on-one with Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant writes in his book Relentless: From Good
to to to to to Great to to to to to Unstoppable “While you’re trying to to to to to choose whether to to to to to go left or right this way way or that way way someone else is is already there While you’re paralyzed from overthinking and over-analyzing your next move someone else went with his gut and beat you to it ” I’ve been thinking about this advice as I I undertake my own next move — an an an upheaval that will transplant my life from Toronto all the way to to Berlin days before we go to to press with this issue It isn’t easy to to abandon the city that’s been my my home home for for more than a a a a decade nor indeed the country that’s been my my home home for for more than three (The last time I I made such a a a a a a drastic move I I was coming from the United Kingdom and I’d just turned four years old ) But when you have a a a a a chance to to make a a a a a a radical life-altering decision you have to to seize the opportunity without too much self-doubt or flaccid equivocating Go with your gut Seek out adventure With that in in in mind it it was heartening to to hear hear the the stories of of so many of of the the people featured in this issue from The Bear’s Ebon Moss-Bachrach — who tells of of the the the the joys of of having a a a a a wife in in the the the the same field between whom they can share their “struggles and and successes and and triumphs” — to this month’s Man Worth Listening To Dax Dasilva who speaks about having had to reinvent himself entirely when he he transitioned from being a a a humble computer programmer to the CEO of his own startup the Montreal-based e-commerce company Lightspeed Summer cover star star Willem Dafoe has much to to say about the value of continuing to to try new things At nearly 70 the hugely esteemed character actor is still trying to to to find ways to to to evolve and to challenge himself even or perhaps especially when it seems frightening As I I I look forward to my next chapter I I I will also miss what I I I leave behind — in particular the remarkable SHARP team with whom it’s been an an honour and a a a a a a a a pleasure to to put together this and other issues over the the the past year It’s only through the the sheer exhilaration of looking ahead as as well as as the the exhaustion involved in in in making it it happen that I can make my way through the move with a a a a a a a a a clear head and without getting too nostalgic or maudlin I’ve made a a a a a a big decision but what I’m trying to remember is is is is that not making a a a a a decision decision is is is is a a a a a decision decision of its own: a a a a a decision to to stay put put rather than to to move forward Or as Grover puts it: “Make a a a a a a a choice choice or or a a choice choice will be made for you ” — CALUM MARSH
