 14 SEPTEMBER 2021
“MAN PLANS, GOD LAUGHS” IS ONE OF THOSE WELL-WORN expressions that once earned an eyeroll. But over the past year and a half, it has proved truer with each global revelation. On one hand, as we barrel into the final quarter of another bonkers year, I’m overjoyed to be reunited with family and friends, to browse flight deals, and actually eat at the restaurants I’ve been ordering from on Uber Eats. On the other, there’s a tentativeness to it all, a simmering feeling that nothing can be planned because everything is unpredictable. In the “Before Times” — which is, frankly, a loathsome phrase — ambiguity about the future used to freak me out. Sure, I’d describe myself as resilient, flexible, and adaptable
in a job interview, but in truth, I like to be in control. Now, none of us are.
It’s not all bad, though. Accepting what you can’t control makes you take stock of what you can — your relationships, your perspective, your pursuits — which can feel liberating in the face of unrelenting uncertainty. Plus, look at where man’s plans have gotten us! We’re facing a man-made climate crisis, the culture wars are heating up, and conspiracy theories run rampant online. But I’m also deeply heartened by humans’ ability to right course, create lasting change, and connect with one another. In this issue, we look at the electric vehicle revolution, how car companies achieve sustainable solutions without sacrificing luxury. We investigate the fashion industry’s commitment to making greener garments through upcy- cling. We also hear from baseball’s biggest star, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., about why brotherhood is the secret sauce to the Blue Jays’ success. And, fear not, we also
share the most beautiful things to buy, wear, and drive right now.
Today, the future is bright and blurry at the same time, but there’s no use in worrying what it holds. And, cliché as it sounds, it’s worth remembering that man
plans and God laughs. But plans change, and so do we.
