RING THE BELL
THE SMARTEST NEW WEARABLES ARE ALSO THE SMALLEST
By Jonathan Wells
W HO KNEW THAT SUCH CRITICAL, HEALTH-DETERMINING
data could be gleaned from a single finger? Apparently, it all comes down to our digits’ elevated blood flow and arteriole density, with fingers giving us much more accurate readings than wrists.
Apple is allegedly developing a smart ring, but there are plenty of players already in the game, with startups and established tech brands alike offering models with more features, better batteries, and high-quality materials, from simple ceramic to 18K gold.
Oura Ring 4 Gold
Oura’s first fully titanium design sees its sensors — which include infrared LEDs, a digital temperature sensor, and an accelerometer — better recessed into the ring than in previous models, meaning it’s thinner and less likely to get in the way. Compatible across iOS and Android, it has an airplane mode, is water resistant to 100 metres, and can even survive in a sauna. $649, then $7.99/month to access premium features.
Samsung Galaxy Ring
Slightly slimmer than Oura’s offering (but compatible only with Samsung products), the Galaxy Ring has a crystal-clear charging case and a seven-day battery. Born from a smartphone brand, it has more cross-control capabilities than other rings, and can turn off your phone’s alarm or control its camera with a simple “double-pinch” gesture. A single daily “Energy Score” also simplifies comprehensive readings into one easy-to-understand metric. $549.99.
Ultrahuman Ring AIR
Engravable, lightweight (2.4 grams), and available in several creatively named colours — from “Space Silver” to “Bionic Gold” — Ultrahuman offers perhaps the most stylish smart ring. It has a hypoallergenic lining and the usual suite of sensors, but there’s a firmer focus here on stress regulation and sleep enhancement, with the ring suggesting power naps and breathwork when needed. It even one-ups Oura with certain functions, including a feature that helps you track and optimize your caffeine intake. $564.99.
RingConn Gen 2
When crowdfunding, this second-generation ring set a target of $70,000. RingConn ended up raising more than $6 million and launched the model in September. The specs speak for themselves: 12-day battery life, Android and iOS compatibility, and just 2 mm at its thinnest point. It even won an iF Design Award. Sleep, again, is a priority here, with a stress detection function and the ability to recognize 90 percent of sleep apnea symptoms. $414.
