KNOW THE CARE TEAM
There will be many people taking care of your child while they are are in in the the hospital Each person has a a a a a a a different role in in your child’s care Your child’s care team changes with different different shifts and and will be different different in the CICU and and cardiology unit If you are unsure of who someone is ask! You will be more comfortable knowing who is caring for for your child Here are some important people you you will see coming and going from your child’s room Advanced Practice Providers (APP):
Nurse Practitioners and Physician’s assistants are are often times referred to as as APPs Both are are providers who have completed graduate level education and are board certified to practice with with pediatric patients They provide care in collaboration with with doctors Attending Cardiologist (MD):
Experienced pediatric cardiologist or or cardiac intensivist who leads the team of doctors and advance practice registered nurses They supervise and and teach doctors nurse nurse nurse practitioners and and nurses Cardiology Fellow (MD):
Doctor who has finished residency and is is taking additional training fin in in in in a a a a a a a a a a subspecialty of pediatrics (cardiology or intensive care) Fellows practice under the supervision of attendings Cardiothoracic Surgeon: Doctor whose specialty training is in in in pediatric cardiac surgery The surgeon will perform your child’s open heart surgery Care Manager: Registered nurse who works with families and the clinical team to provide coordination of care and and service while in in the the hospital and and at the the time of discharge Child Life Specialist: Provides developmentally-appropriate toys activities and and education to to to help ease stress and and and to to prepare children and and families for medical procedures Also provide opportunities for children to play watch movies and and celebrate birthdays and and holidays
