Nano-sensors based on MCS utilize the nano dimensions to achieve high sensitivity. The target is the simultaneous detection of the heavy metal ions (HMIs): copper, cadmium, and lead in water at low concentrations, down to the ppb scale. This project aimed to find optimal manufacturing materials and environmental conditions for dip-pen nanolithography (DPN) of nanoclusters. The lithography was carried out with an NLP-2000 device, on a substrate of gold or platinum electrodes. The nanoclusters were made of PEDOT:PSS mixed with different ligands of varying ratios, tested as multiple compositions. Each sensor underwent an AFM scan and was then analyzed via MATLAB to determine surface-area-to-volume ratios. Besides the morphology inspection, the sensors underwent electrochemical (SWASV) tests to determine their limits of detection.

Wheat pest control relies on chemical pesticides, which leave harmful residues on our food. Moreover, since insects are expected to develop resistance to these chemicals over time, a new solution is needed.
In this project, we focused on developing and demonstrating the feasibility of an innovative and environmentally friendly pest-control method based on selective heating, using electromagnetic waves. This approach leverages the differences in absorption coefficients between wheat and insects. To prove the feasibility of the proposed method, we developed a prototype sample of a wheat storage facility containing insects. A relatively large amount of wheat was placed inside a capacitor structure, with an RF generator feeding waves through an L-shaped matching network designed for the operating frequency.
