ORARI GORGE POLL HEREFORD STUD
We would like to welcome you to our 56th sale of Polled Hereford bulls after over 70 years of breeding. This year’s sale catalogue of thick, growthy, meaty bulls all have genetics in the top bracket for growth, fertility and carcass quality. This shows up very strongly in the indexes for Hereford Prime and Export from self-replacing cow herds. The indexes give the dollar return expected from the progeny of these bulls, with the catalogue average in the top 15% of the Australasian breed. Most are in the top 10% and some in the top 1%.
We are getting many compliments already about how even the bulls are. They are possibly slightly smaller framed than we used to breed a few years ago but they are meatier and slightly heavier than previously. This is something we have consciously tried to do in the process of trying to breed efficient cows for the hill and high meat yields for the processors.
We had a great scanning this year with 84% in calf in the first cycle and only 2 MA stud cows dry after two cycles. The AI also went very well with 76% in calf to one round of synchronised AI. This means most cows are in calf to our first-choice bull but also gives us plenty of room to cull for any other reason we can. This means we are up in numbers while still increasing the quality of the herd.
• All sale bulls are DNA sire verified to ensure the pedigree and therefore the accuracy of the EBVs
• As always, all our sale bulls sell fully guaranteed.
• All bulls have been semen tested and checked for abnormalities.
• All bulls have been assessed and passed for structural soundness of feet and legs by an accredited assessor, Bill Austin.
The format of this year’s sale is still undecided. All going well,
if we are down to level two, we plan to have a physical sale. However, seats in the sale shed would be restricted to registered buyers and agents to make sure there is room for everyone while still maintaining acceptable distances. If for some reason we
are still at level three then the sale will have to be on an online format which we have been reviewing.
We have an official open day on Tuesday 19th May which we recommend people take advantage of just in case they cannot make it on sale day. As usual, we are always open to visitors to view the bulls so if you can’t make the 19th then give us a call to arrange another time.
Graham and Rosa, Robert and Alex.
