SELECTION INDEXES FOR NEW ZEALAND
Selection Indexes rank animals for a single production goal – PROFIT. They take the hard work out of determining how much emphasis to give each of the available growth, maternal, carcase and fertility EBVs, when selecting parent animals. An Index is a composite EBV ( EBV for Profit) for traits best suited to a particular production system and/or target market. There are four breed- specific Indexes for Hereford cattle:
1. Hereford Prime/Maternal Index
Focuses on producing a 275kg carcase weight steer off grass by 18
months of age, from a self-replacing cow herd.
2. Export/Maternal Index
Focuses on the production of a 300kg carcase weight steer off grass, by 20 months of age, from a self-replacing cow herd (a herd producing females over a 5 year period to continue the breeding programme).
What do the Index Figures Mean in Terms of Herd Profitability?
You have established that the production system that most closely mirrors your breeding programme is represented by the Export/Maternal Index. There are two Hereford bulls you are interested in with Export/Maternal Indexes of $60 and $40 per cow mated respectively and you want to compare their lifetime profitability. Assuming each mates 200 cows during its lifetime, the first bull will generate $2000 i.e. [$(60-40)/2 x 200] more profit during his lifetime than the second bull. In other words, you can afford to pay $2000 more for the first bull and still be financially as well off compared with purchasing the second one.
