Expectations
This A Level course requires students to, first and foremost, have an interest in the world around them and how society impacts our lives. You should have an interest and curiosity
in people and culture,
being self-motivated to read around the subject to develop a critical awareness of the key concepts of education, welfare and poverty. A sound ability
to construct an argument, debate topical issues
and structure an essay
in a logical fashion are recommended skills for this A Level course.
Overview
Sociology is the study of society on a number of different levels. It is an area of study that will help students understand the real nature of the social world in which they live. The course covers a range of relevant topics with an emphasis on contemporary society, ranging from youth culture to the exploration of inequalities in society. Whilst there is a strong emphasis on many traditional topics in sociology that continue to be relevant, there is also a range of topics which are the latest and most exciting developments in the discipline.
Future Pathway
A Level Sociology is very good preparation for university, where strong essay writing skills are very important. Universities recognise that sociology A Level provides students with a very good foundation in social, political and policy knowledge. Sociology is regarded as a demanding and rigorous A Level
which combines well with any other combination
of subjects. Sociology students go on to a wide range of jobs in policing, research, teaching, medicine, politics and civil service as well as taking jobs in the service sector. Graduates of sociology have higher levels of employment than many other subjects.
Key Skills
Studying sociology will definitely help develop your essay skills, allowing you
to discuss different views on social issues in a critical and evaluative way. Being able to draw on a range
of perspectives, evidence and contemporary issues
is excellent preparation for university and employment. Sociology provides a strong understanding of social and political issues, past and present.
